Wind Mitigations

What is a Wind Mitigation inspection?

A wind mitigation inspection will check for wind resistant features on the home which may possibly qualify you for discounts on your homeowners insurance. These wind resistance items are checked according to the items listed on the Florida Wind Mitigation Verification Inspection 1802 form

To qualify for wind mitigation discounts on the home from your home insurance company, typically not all of the wind resistant criteria stated on the Florida Wind Mitigation 1802  form must be met to get some sort of discount, but the more criteria met, the better the possible discounts*.

These wind resistance criteria listed on the Florida Wind Mitigation Verification Inspection 1802 form are:
1.  Construction year:  the year the home was built
2.  Type and age of roof covering on the home (shingles, tile, etc.)
3.  Roof deck attachment: the type of roof sheathing/decking and what types nails used and spacing of those nails
4.  Roof to wall attachment: the method used to attach (such as straps and/or clips) the trusses or rafters to the exterior walls of the home
5.  Roof geometry:  roof measurements and shape (such as a Hip style roof or a non Hip style roof)
6.  Presence of a Secondary Water Resistance feature: such as a self adhering sealed roof deck underlayment
7.  Opening protections: whether you have wind rated or protected openings for the doors, windows, skylights. garage doors, etc.

How can a Wind Mitigation inspection benefit homeowners?

In most cases, homes that were built in the 1960's era to the modern era have some type of wind resistance feature that may qualify the home for insurance discounts. Wind mitigations inspection reports are usually good for 5 years before they expire with the insurance company, after that another wind mitigation may be needed to be done on the home to continue the earned discount credits. Wind mitigation inspections typically pay for themselves, earning possible discounts each year for a guaranteed five years (if not longer). Many times,  its possible that the discounts on the home may reach well into the hundreds and even thousands of dollars over a five year period.

I always like to recommend a wind mitigation inspection to my clients as the possible discounts from the home insurance companies usually outweigh the price of the wind mitigation inspection and benefit the homeowner with possible discounts for years. Without a wind mitigation inspection, your insurer assumes that your home has the least wind-resistant features available. Notifying them that you have at least a few will require them to offer a discount.
*Please note: If the home qualifies for wind resistance discounts from the Wind Mitigation Verification Inspection 1802 form, the discount amounts may differ from one home insurance company to another.
